Viswanathan, 82, was born in Berhampur, Odisha, India and raised by her parents who instilled her interest in birds, she said. “My son Hari was coming home from college each summer to work at the laboratory and so he built a pond for me in 1995 and a warbler pond in 1996 to grow Lotus, which is the national flower of India.” “I always wanted to have a pond to attract birds,” Viswanathan said. The yard of her home on Los Pueblos is the first in Los Alamos designated a certified wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, a designation she received in 1995. The woman behind those beautiful photos is Selvi Viswanathan, a Los Alamos resident and nature lover. Ramon is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins as well as good friends whom he cherished, calling and visiting them throughout the years. Ramon also enjoyed volunteering at the Los Alamos Visitor Center and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. In their retirement years, Ramon and Marvine enjoyed traveling taking many cruises, traveling extensively throughout the United States, and foreign countries including Mexico, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land. Together they raised three children in Los Alamos and remained married for 64 years. On November 8, 1958, Ramon married Marvine Gallegos, his high school sweetheart. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to work at the Laboratory in Los Alamos as an Administrative Staff Member in WX-3 at S-Site until his retirement in 1991 from the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was a 1954 graduate of Pojoaque Valley High School where he served as President of the Student Council, officer in the Future Farmers of America, and in the Letterman Club as a member of both the basketball and baseball teams.Īfter graduating from high school, Ramon worked for the Santa Fe County Treasurer’s office and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory prior to being drafted in the United States Army where he served overseas in Germany as a Staff Sargent.
